Dark Current in Consumer Cameras: Not What you Expect

    astronomy
    The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    dark current
    The current that flows in a photodetector when there is no optical radiation incident on the detector and operating voltages are applied.
    dark frame
    A frame taken to identify electronic noise in a CCD imaging device. A dark frame is recorded without exposing the CCD to any external light by, for example, leaving the shutter of a CCD camera closed. The dark frame is given the same exposure time as the desired light frame. After the light frame is taken, the dark frame is subtracted from it, removing some of the noise from the image.
    dark noise
    The noise produced in a photodetector when the photocathode is shielded from all external optical radiation and operating voltages are applied.
    exposure
    In optics, the total radiant energy incident on a surface-per-unit area. It is equal to the integral over time of the radiant flux density. Also known as radiant exposure.
    image quality
    A measure of the closeness with which an optical image is capable of resembling the original object. The factors that affect image quality are lens aberrations, diffraction, dirt and stray light within the system, and atmospheric turbulence and haze outside it. If the image is recorded photographically, it can become further degraded by image motion during exposure and by light diffusion in the emulsion.     noise
    The unwanted and unpredictable fluctuations that distort a received signal and hence tend to obscure the desired message. Noise disturbances, which may be generated in the devices of a communications system or which may enter the system from the outside, limit the range of the system and place requirements on the signal power necessary to ensure good reception.
    telescope
    An afocal optical device made up of lenses or mirrors, usually with a magnification greater than unity, that renders distant objects more distinct, by enlarging their images on the retina.
