Microwave Photonic Filter Shifts Paradigm for Future Communications

Researchers from the University of Twente have developed a multifunctional photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that enables programmable filtering functions with a reported record-high dynamic range. The advancement addresses concepts and technologies that include integration, versatile programmability, and techniques for enhancing key radio frequency performance metrics, such as the noise figure. Though prior R&D in microwave photonics has targeted improvements to these aspects, the researchers said, the recent work introduces an approach to do so simultaneously in a single circuit....Read full article

    Glossary
    microwave
An electromagnetic wave lying within the region of the frequency spectrum that is between about 1000 MHz (1 GHz) and 100,000 MHz (100 GHz). This is equivalent to the wavelength spectrum that is between one millimeter and one meter, and is also referred to as the infrared and short wave spectrum.
    integrated photonics
Integrated photonics is a field of study and technology that involves the integration of optical components, such as lasers, modulators, detectors, and waveguides, on a single chip or substrate. The goal of integrated photonics is to miniaturize and consolidate optical elements in a manner similar to the integration of electronic components on a microchip in traditional integrated circuits. Key aspects of integrated photonics include: Miniaturization: Integrated photonics aims to...
    noise
The unwanted and unpredictable fluctuations that distort a received signal and hence tend to obscure the desired message. Noise disturbances, which may be generated in the devices of a communications system or which may enter the system from the outside, limit the range of the system and place requirements on the signal power necessary to ensure good reception.
