Laser Stability Improved by an Order of Magnitude

BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 12, 2012 — A laser so stable that its frequency varies by no more than two parts in 10,000 trillion represents an approach for constructing high-quality optical cavities that improve prior designs by more than an order of magnitude. The laser was developed and tested by an international collaboration at NIST/JILA and a group at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), NIST's counterpart in Germany. It will accelerate progress in developing optical clocks that operate at frequencies more than 10,000 times higher than the approximately 9.2-GHz microwaves used as the current worldwide time...Read full article

    atomic clock
An atomic clock is a highly precise timekeeping device that uses the vibrations or oscillations of atoms as a reference for measuring time. The most common type of atomic clock uses the vibrations of atoms, typically cesium or rubidium atoms, to define the length of a second. The principle behind atomic clocks is based on the fundamental properties of atoms, which oscillate at extremely stable and predictable frequencies. The primary concept employed in atomic clocks is the phenomenon of...
    cryostat
A cryostat is a device used to maintain very low temperatures, typically below the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (77 K or -196°C) or even lower. It provides a controlled environment for experiments, research, and storage of materials that require extremely cold temperatures. Cryostats typically consist of a vacuum-insulated container or chamber, often made of stainless steel or other thermally insulating materials, to minimize heat transfer from the surrounding environment. Inside...
    maser
An acronym for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Predecessor to the laser, the maser or 'microwave laser' was the first device to produce coherent electromagnetic waves, and was done at microwave frequencies through amplification by stimulated emission. A laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is a maser that works over a broader range of higher frequency photons in the ultraviolet and visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
