100K Dpi Printing Unveiled

ZURICH, Switzerland, Sept. 11, 2007 -- A new technique allows the printing of particles as small as 60 nanometers -- roughly 100 times smaller than a human red blood cell -- in complex patterns at a resolution of 100,000 dots per inch. The level of control offered by the nanoprinting technique could lead to breakthroughs in nanoscale biosensors, ultratiny lenses inside future optical chips, and the fabrication of nanowires for next-generation computer chips.     nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optoelectronic
    Pertaining to a device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
