John Staples, Defence Vision Systems

A new multidetector system uses multiple-wavelength sensors and lasers for rangefinding, target spotting and target illumination. Multisensor detectors can be of great use to surveillance systems, whether they use intensified CCD, CMOS, InGaAs/short-wave infrared or long-wave infrared. These may be stand-alone systems or may incorporate a laser rangefinder, laser designator or laser illuminator. Modern surveillance should be able to detect and identify a specific target. Detecting a target or threat and then measuring the range to it, or illuminating it, generally requires a good...Read full article

    Glossary
    detector
    1. A device designed to convert the energy of incident radiation into another form for the determination of the presence of the radiation. The device may function by electrical, photographic or visual means. 2. A device that provides an electric output that is a useful measure of the radiation that is incident on the device.
    illumination
The general term for the application of light to a subject. It should not be used in place of the specific quantity illuminance.
    laser designator
A laser device used to establish a location or target usually for detection by an impact source e.g. missiles and guided munitions. Laser designation sources utilize a system configuration which is optically corrected in order to reach long distances as well as small losses in order to increase performance.
    laser rangefinder
A laser rangefinder is a device that uses laser technology to measure the distance between the device and a target. It operates on the principle of measuring the time it takes for a laser beam to travel to the target and back, calculating the distance based on the speed of light. Laser rangefinders are commonly used in various applications, including surveying, hunting, golfing, military and defense, and outdoor activities. Key points about laser rangefinders: Distance measurement: The...
    long-wave infrared
Long-wave infrared (LWIR) refers to a specific range of the infrared spectrum. Infrared radiation is divided into three main categories based on wavelength: near-infrared (NIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR). LWIR covers wavelengths typically ranging from about 8 to 15 micrometers (μm). Key points about LWIR: Wavelength range: LWIR corresponds to the longer wavelengths within the infrared spectrum, specifically in the range of 8 to 15 micrometers. These...
