A novel graphene-based electrode, produced with a standard LightScribe DVD optical drive, ends the search for an optimal electrochemical capacitor. The discovery could pave the way for a new class of flexible energy-storage devices. Electrochemical capacitors, also called ultracapacitors or supercapacitors, store higher amounts of charge than regular capacitors and have garnered attention as energy-storage devices because they charge and discharge faster than batteries. However, unlike batteries, they are limited by low energy densities. Researchers have sought an electrochemical...Read full article

    graphene
Graphene is a two-dimensional allotrope of carbon consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice pattern. It is the basic building block of other carbon-based materials such as graphite, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes (e.g., buckyballs). Graphene has garnered significant attention due to its remarkable properties, making it one of the most studied materials in the field of nanotechnology. Key properties of graphene include: Two-dimensional structure:...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
