Photonic System Explores Two-Dimensional Topological Pumping

SHANGHAI, Jan. 3, 2023 — In photonic systems, Thouless pumping enables light transport to take place in a robust way. The method is quantized — determined by the global rather than the local properties of a system. It exhibits topological features, and its ubiquitous nature leads to its occurrence in many areas of science. Though Thouless pumping is not limited to solid states, Nobel Prize-winning physicist David Thouless discovered it in a solid state, in work almost four decades ago. Building on prior work in which they discovered that optical moiré lattices can inhibit light diffraction...Read full article

    topological photonics
Topological photonics is a branch of physics and optics that explores the application of topological concepts to the behavior of light in photonic systems. Drawing inspiration from the field of topological insulators in condensed matter physics, topological photonics investigates the manipulation and control of light waves in a way that is robust against certain imperfections or disorder. Key features and concepts in topological photonics include: Topological insulators: In condensed matter...
    nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
