Optical Method Clocks Expansion of Universe

Researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Hawaii Institute of Astronomy proposed an optical method that uses the light from quasars to determine the rate of the universe’s expansion. The method, the researchers said, is more direct than previous approaches. Quasars have been used in this manner before; however, the new method, called intensity correlation speckles, measures the difference between the red shift in two paths of light from the same quasar.     interferometry
    The study and utilization of interference phenomena, based on the wave properties of light.
    quasar
    A contraction of quasi stellar. An astronomical object that appears to be a star but has a different, larger redshift.
    telescope
    An afocal optical device made up of lenses or mirrors, usually with a magnification greater than unity, that renders distant objects more distinct, by enlarging their images on the retina.
    doppler effect
    The effect produced on a wave frequency because of the relative motion of a source or an observer. The radiation emitted from a source that moves away from an observer appears to be of lower frequency than the radiation emitted from a stationary source. The radiation emitted from a source moving toward the observer appears to be of a higher frequency than that from a stationary source.
    doppler shift
    The magnitude, expressed in cycles per second, of the alteration of the wave frequency observed as a result of the Doppler effect.
    doppler broadening
    The spreading of potentially equal radiation frequencies that results in broadening of the spectral line. This effect is brought about when radiating atoms, molecules or nuclei have different velocities with respect to the observer, and therefore give rise to different Doppler shifts.
