International Research Team Applies Metasurface Photonic Device Potential to Cold Atom Quantum Technology

BIRMINGHAM, England, Aug. 6, 2020 — Researchers at the UK Quantum Technology Hub Sensors and Timing, led by the University of Birmingham, have designed and implemented an approach for miniaturizing devices used in quantum sensing systems. A new technique for shrinking the size of quantum sensors drives the discovery, which relies on optical metasurfaces cutting the amount of space a laser delivery system needs to achieve functionality in quantum technology. Sensing-device quantum technology works by controlling laser beams to engineer and manipulate atoms at supercold temperatures. This typically necessitates a vacuum...Read full article

    metasurfaces
Metasurfaces are two-dimensional arrays of subwavelength-scale artificial structures, often referred to as meta-atoms or meta-elements, arranged in a specific pattern to manipulate the propagation of light or other electromagnetic waves at subwavelength scales. These structures can control the phase, amplitude, and polarization of incident light across a planar surface, enabling unprecedented control over the wavefront of light. Key features and characteristics of metasurfaces include: ...
    quantum sensing
Quantum sensing refers to a class of sensing technologies that leverage principles from quantum mechanics to enhance the precision and sensitivity of measurements. Traditional sensors operate based on classical physics, but quantum sensing exploits quantum properties, such as superposition and entanglement, to achieve improved performance in terms of accuracy, resolution, and sensitivity. Key concepts and characteristics of quantum sensing include: Superposition: Quantum sensors can...
