Fluorescence Sensing Identifies Cancer Indicators in the Brain

MÜNSTER, Germany, May 19, 2022 — Researchers at the University Hospital Münster and Paris-Saclay University established a method to correct for artifacts caused by changes in blood flow, and recorded cell-specific lactate levels in rat brains using fluorescence signals from fiber-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) sensors. While FRET is known to be useful for studying neurophysiology through microscopy, its use for in vivo studies is limited by artifacts that appear in the FRET recordings. Lactate levels in the body can be an indicator for cancer and other diseases. Current methods for monitoring...Read full article

    optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
