Supporters of all-optical switching say it will allow dramatic speed increases in data communications by eliminating the need to convert photonic signals to electronic signals – and back. All-optical processing – switching light using light – would also facilitate photonic computers, which promise much higher data throughput and speed than electronic processing. In another step toward all-optical switching, a team at Georgia Institute of Technology has synthesized a material optimized for photonic switching applications. The organic dye material features a combination...Read full article

    Glossary
    absorption
Absorption is the process by which a material takes in energy from electromagnetic radiation (such as light, heat, or sound) and converts it to other forms of energy, typically internal energy (such as heat). This process occurs when the energy of the incident radiation is transferred to the atoms or molecules of the absorbing material, causing them to increase in vibrational, rotational, or electronic energy levels. In different contexts, absorption can refer to: Physics and optics:...
    isotropic
That property of a material that determines that velocity of propagation within the material is the same for all directions.
    light
Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
    organic dye
Any organic substance, that when dissolved in appropriate liquid based solvents will absorb and emit electromagnetic radiation in the near ultraviolet, visible and near infrared spectral regions. These dyes are suitable gain mediums for the dye laser. See organic dye laser.
    parallel transmission
A mode of data transmission whereby bits of information are carried simultaneously at different frequencies over a single channel.
