Molecules May Enable 3-D Optical Data Storage
Apr 1, 1999 — Highly efficient two-photon absorbing polymers may eventually be used for 3-D optical data storage and myriad other applications including biomedical imaging. A group led by Joseph W. Perry and Seth R. Marder of the University of Arizona at Tucson have detailed their findings in the March 4 issue of Nature. When pulsed with laser light, these compounds absorb photons two at a time and can cause chemical or physical changes with resolution in three dimensions. The chemists' experiments reveal...
Fiber Optic Array Improves Spectroscopic Imaging
Sep 1, 1998 — Researchers from the University of South Carolina have created a fiber optic array that provides data in the spatial, temporal and spectroscopic dimensions. It may be useful in biomedical applications such as diagnosing cancer. The fiber optic...
Silver 'Mirrors' Reflect Single Molecule's Wild Dance
May 1, 1997 — Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered a way to identify the structure of a single molecule, knowledge that could prove invaluable for biomedical applications such as human gene analysis. The method,...
Bioengineering Gets a Boost
Feb 1, 1997 — ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A $986,000 grant from the Whitaker Foundation will boost the biomedical engineering program at the University of Rochester. The grant will help fund a teaching laboratory and three new faculty members to the schools of engineering...
Coherent Ships Glaucoma-Treating Lasers Overseas
Dec 1, 1996 — Coherent Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., announced that it will begin shipment outside the US of a medical laser used in primary open-angle glaucoma treatment. The company designed its Selecta 7000 specifically to perform selective laser...
