Freeform optics involve lenses with surface shapes that lack certain symmetrical attributes to provide improved aperture, field of view, and miniaturization. More complex surface profiles allow beam shaping, and many optical systems can be miniaturized while reducing the number of elements to produce optical systems that are small, light, and yield high performance. Applications include augmented and virtual reality, IR and military optical systems, and 3D imaging and visualization.
