Ulissi Wins DoE Fellowship

Ulissi.jpgZachary Ulissi, a University of Delaware senior double majoring in chemical engineering and physics, has received a Department of Energy (DoE) Computational Science Graduate Fellowship that will total $250,000 over the next four years. During his undergraduate years, Ulissi conducted research at UD and the National Institutes of Health, co-authored three journal papers, and submitted a patent application for a biomedical polarization imaging device. The fellowship will cover Ulissi's expenses as he works on his PhD and continues his research into developing catalytic agents for creating alternative fuels. The fellowship covers all tuition and fees and provides a stipend of $32,400 per year, as well as funds for travel and computer equipment. Ulissi will also have a summer internship at a DoE lab.

Glossary
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
polarization
Polarization refers to the orientation of oscillations in a transverse wave, such as light waves, radio waves, or other electromagnetic waves. In simpler terms, it describes the direction in which the electric field vector of a wave vibrates. Understanding polarization is important in various fields, including optics, telecommunications, and physics. Key points about polarization: Transverse waves: Polarization is a concept associated with transverse waves, where the oscillations occur...
