ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 18 -- The Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI) of Cambridge, Mass., which has a mission to promote nano- and other advanced technologies, is presenting a one-day summit tomorrow of businesses demonstrating how nanotechnology is influencing new product development in areas ranging from medical devices to electronics to homeland security and how those new products will impact society and economies. The summit will take place at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town in Alexandria.

The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office's (NNCO) E. Clayton Teague will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the latest developments and activities of the NNCO, which is the point of contact on federal nanotechnology activities for government organizations, academia, industry, professional societies, foreign organizations and others to exchange information. Teague will discuss how these actions are impacting nanoscale research, development and commercialization.

Kenneth Dean of Motorola Labs will speak on its new CNT nanoemissive display (NED) technology, which could create less expensive, large, flat panel displays with outstanding quality and a longer operating life.

Executives from IBM, General Electric Co., Procter & Gamble Co., Altair Nanotechnologies, Hybrid Plastics Inc., Molecular Imprints Inc., Nanophase Technologies Corp. and Nantero will also give briefings to summit attendees about their newest nano influenced products.

Admission to the Nano Impact Summit is available at the door. For more information, visit: www.nsti.org/NanoImpact2005

Glossary
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
