Waveguide Opens New Window to Solar Energy Generation

An advancement to smart window technology incorporates luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) into window or windowpane designs. A team from Rice University’s Brown School of Engineering designed its foot-square “windows” by placing a conjugated polymer between two clear acrylic panels. The impetus for the integrated photovoltaics technique stems from a “smart glass” competition, and aims to solve energy generation and efficiency issues that face building structures. In the window architecture, the thin middle layer absorbs light in a specific wavelength...Read full article

    polymer
Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. These monomers are chemically bonded together to form long chains or networks, creating a macromolecular structure. The process of linking monomers together is known as polymerization. Polymers can be classified into several categories based on their structure, properties, and mode of synthesis. Some common types of polymers include: Synthetic polymers: These are human-made polymers produced through...
    waveguide
A waveguide is a physical structure or device that is designed to confine and guide electromagnetic waves, such as radio waves, microwaves, or light waves. It is commonly used in communication systems, radar systems, and other applications where the controlled transmission of electromagnetic waves is crucial. The basic function of a waveguide is to provide a path for the propagation of electromagnetic waves while minimizing the loss of energy. Waveguides come in various shapes and sizes, and...
