Ultratech Inc. has acquired the assets of Cambridge Nanotech Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., a developer and supplier of atomic-layer deposition (ALD) technology. Financial terms were not disclosed. Ultratech says that adding the ALD technology will expand its nanotechnology and intellectual property (IP) portfolio, enabling it to address new areas within the electronics industry and allowing it to access new markets such as biomedical and energy. ALD has emerged as a critical enabling technology for depositing precise nanometer-thin films. It is in high demand in volume manufacturing environments, microelectromechanical systems, implantable devices in the biomedical sector, and batteries and fuel cells in the energy field. “By increasing our IP and expanding our nanotechnology portfolio to new levels, we expect to generate a new revenue stream in existing and new markets,” said Arthur W. Zafiropoulo, chairman and CEO of Ultratech. “We expect that this acquisition will enhance our short-term as well as our long-term growth expectations.” Ultratech manufactures photolithography and laser processing equipment.
