Tissue Made Transparent

PASADENA, Calif., Feb. 13, 2008 -- A new optical trick that counteracts the scattering of light through humans could one day make biological tissue as see-through as a jellyfish under diagnostic and therapeutic imagers. "The reason a person is not transparent is that their tissues are highly scattering," sending light waves careening through the tissue instead of straight through, as they would through the tissue of a jellyfish, said biophotonics researcher Changhuei Yang of the California Institute of Technology. This scattering, in addition to rendering us opaque, makes the detection of disease a much trickier issue,...Read full article

    Glossary
    light
Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
