Surgical Microscope Uses OCT to Define Precise Tumor Margins

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 14, 2024 — A megahertz-speed optical coherence tomography (MHz-OCT) instrument integrated with a neurosurgical microscope has demonstrated the ability to acquire high-quality, volumetric, cross-sectional brain scans in seconds. The images obtained by the system are immediately available for post-processing. The microscope-integrated MHz-OCT system could be used by medical personnel in operating rooms to precisely identify tumor margins during brain surgery, so that damage to healthy tissue is minimized. It could also be used to improve surgical results in procedures that require comprehensive...Read full article

    Glossary
    artificial intelligence
The ability of a machine to perform certain complex functions normally associated with human intelligence, such as judgment, pattern recognition, understanding, learning, planning, and problem solving.
    machine learning
Machine learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to improve their performance on a specific task through experience or training. Instead of being explicitly programmed to perform a task, a machine learning system learns from data and examples. The primary goal of machine learning is to develop models that can generalize patterns from data and make predictions or decisions without being...
    optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in medical and scientific fields to capture high-resolution, cross-sectional images of biological tissues. It provides detailed, real-time, and three-dimensional visualization of tissue structures at the micrometer scale. OCT is particularly valuable in ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and various other medical specialties. Here are the key features and components of optical coherence tomography: Principle of...
    adaptive optics
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of atmospheric distortions. The Earth's atmosphere can cause light passing through it to experience distortions, resulting in image blurring and degradation in various optical applications, such as astronomical observations, laser communications, and imaging systems. Adaptive optics systems actively adjust the optical elements in real-time to compensate for these distortions. Key...
