Signal Sorting Method Suppresses Noise in STED Microscopy

Researchers from Zhejiang University have proposed a novel microscopy method that selectively and effectively suppresses background noise in the existing technique of stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy. The newly developed approach bypasses drawbacks that are caused by current methods used for noise suppression in STED imaging, which is considered a limitation of the technique. STED microscopy was developed in 1994, demonstrated in 1999, and earned its developer, Stefan Hell, the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2014. The practical use of STED microscopy, which is a...Read full article

    Glossary
    sted microscopy
STED microscopy, or stimulated emission depletion microscopy, is a superresolution imaging technique in fluorescence microscopy that surpasses the diffraction limit, enabling the visualization of structures at the nanoscale level. This technique was developed to overcome the limitations imposed by the diffraction of light, which traditionally hindered the resolution of optical microscopy to a few hundred nanometers. Key features and principles of STED microscopy: Superresolution: STED...
    noise
The unwanted and unpredictable fluctuations that distort a received signal and hence tend to obscure the desired message. Noise disturbances, which may be generated in the devices of a communications system or which may enter the system from the outside, limit the range of the system and place requirements on the signal power necessary to ensure good reception.
    frequency domain
The frequency domain is a concept used in signal processing and analysis to represent signals and data in terms of their frequency components. In contrast to the time domain, where signals are described with respect to time, the frequency domain provides information about the frequency content of a signal. Here are key points related to the frequency domain: Frequency and time domains: Time domain and frequency domain are two different ways of representing the same information. A signal's...
