GENEVA and ARMONK, N.Y., July 26, 2007 -- Semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics (ST) and IBM said they will collaborate to develop next-generation process technology -- the "recipe" used in semiconductor development and manufacturing. Financial terms were not disclosed. The agreement includes 32- and 22-nm CMOS process technology development, design enablement and advanced research adapted to the manufacturing of 300-mm silicon wafers. It includes both the core bulk CMOS technology and value-added derivative system-on-chip (SoC) technologies, and "positions both companies at the leading edge of technology development," the...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    system-on-chip
A system-on-chip (SoC) is an integrated circuit (IC) that incorporates all necessary components of a computer or electronic system onto a single chip. This typically includes a microprocessor or microcontroller, memory, input/output interfaces, timing sources, and sometimes even analog components. SoCs are designed to provide a complete and compact solution for various applications, ranging from mobile devices and consumer electronics to embedded systems and networking equipment. Features...
