Programmable Device Enables Optical Control at Unprecedented Speeds

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 30, 2022 — An international team led by MIT researchers has developed a spatial light modulator (SLM) that promises greater control of light at orders of magnitude more quickly than commercial devices. The team also developed a fabrication process to ensure consistent device quality when manufactured at scale. The device could be used to create superfast lidar sensors for self-driving vehicles that could image a scene about a million times faster than existing mechanical systems. It could also be used to accelerate brain scanners that use light to see through tissue. By being able to image tissue...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
    spatial light modulator
A spatial light modulator (SLM) is an optical device that modulates or manipulates the amplitude, phase, or polarization of light in two dimensions, typically in the form of an array. SLMs are versatile tools used in various optical applications, including adaptive optics, optical signal processing, holography, and imaging. There are different types of SLMs, each with its own operating principle: Liquid crystal spatial light modulators (LC-SLM): These SLMs use liquid crystal technology to...
