Photonics’ “Semiconductorization” Stands Out Among Trends at Photonics West 2025

Once again, Photonics West was thriving, with the exhibit halls and floors of the conference center humming with intense conversations about the latest advances in all areas of photonics technology. I will discuss a few trends I found particularly noteworthy.

BY ANDREAS THOSS, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

It was surprising how far-removed Washington and political discussions appeared to be from this meeting of photonics experts from all around the world. Indeed, those who lost their travel grants on very short notice were missed (and colleagues who made it to San Francisco were alarmed). But even with the intense discussions on social media, politics ultimately became a secondary topic at Photonics West. Of course, there were great scientific presentations and lots (nearly 1400) company booths. But the most important thing was socializing. Catching up with old friends and making new ones...Read full article

    laser fusion
Optical confinement of matter with high field energies intended to induce a stable nuclear fusion interaction.
    quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
    integrated photonics
Integrated photonics is a field of study and technology that involves the integration of optical components, such as lasers, modulators, detectors, and waveguides, on a single chip or substrate. The goal of integrated photonics is to miniaturize and consolidate optical elements in a manner similar to the integration of electronic components on a microchip in traditional integrated circuits. Key aspects of integrated photonics include: Miniaturization: Integrated photonics aims to...
