Nanostructured Glass Is Based on Butterfly Wing

PITTSBURGH, July 16, 2019 — Glass for displays, tablets, laptops, smartphones, and solar cells needs to allow light to pass through, but could benefit from a surface that repels water, oil, and other liquids. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) created a new type of glass that is clear across a range of wavelengths and angles as well as superomniphobic and antifogging. The design for the glass was inspired by the wings of the glasswing butterfly (Greta oto). Machine learning techniques were used to help streamline the development process. A glasswing butterfly. Glossary
    glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
    machine learning
Machine learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to improve their performance on a specific task through experience or training. Instead of being explicitly programmed to perform a task, a machine learning system learns from data and examples. The primary goal of machine learning is to develop models that can generalize patterns from data and make predictions or decisions without being...
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
