Mobius Photonics of Santa Clara, Calif., a producer of short-pulsed fiber laser sources, has named interim CEO Robert L. Mortensen to the position permanently. In June, he replaced company founder Dr. Laura Smoliar, who left to pursue other opportunities. Mortensen, a laser business veteran, joined Spectra-Physics in 1964. In 1975 he joined Quanta-Ray as CEO, leading the company until its sale in 1980. In 1984 he founded Lightwave Electronics Corp., where he was CEO for more than 15 years. Holding an MBA from Harvard University, he has been a Mobius board member since 2006. Mobius’ fiber-based infrared, green and ultraviolet laser sources are used in applications including materials processing for solar cell manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, flat panel display production and STED (stimulated emission depletion) microscopy.
