Measuring NIR Sources for Safe and Accurate 3D Sensing

The rapid adoption of 3D NIR sensing systems requires effective methods to measure the quality, performance, and safety of NIR emitters.

ANNE CORNING, RADIANT VISION SYSTEMS

3D sensing with NIR wavelengths has taken off in the past several years, with use in such applications as facial and gesture recognition, eye tracking, and automotive vision systems such as lidar. The market for these optical sensing systems is projected to see a 22.7 to 24 percent compound annual growth rate, reaching as high as $3.8 billion in total revenues by 20271,2. NIR wavelengths range from 700 to 1500 nm, and NIR light sources can be used for multiple applications. For example, NIR in the 780-nm range is used and considered safe for eye tracking, the 850-nm range is used for...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
    time of flight
(TOF) The length of time needed for a signal to arrive at and be reflected from the target. The basis of an active autoranging/autofocus system.
