Light-Based and Lightweight, Aerogel Photocatalyst Enables Efficient Hydrogen Production

ZURICH, Dec. 22, 2021 — With appropriate pretreatment, aerogels could serve as efficient, visible light-active photocatalysts for industrial use. The Laboratory for Multifunctional Materials at ETH Zurich, headed by professor Markus Niederberger, demonstrated that nanoparticle-based aerogels can be doped with nitrogen to make them visible-light active for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production. The group works with aerogels composed of crystalline semiconductor nanoparticles. In its work, it surmised that if photocatalysis is to be more efficient and useful to industry, the catalyst must be able to absorb...Read full article

    Glossary
    photochemistry
The study of chemical reactions stimulated by the properties of light.
    plasmonics
Plasmonics is a field of science and technology that focuses on the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and free electrons in a metal or semiconductor at the nanoscale. Specifically, plasmonics deals with the collective oscillations of these free electrons, known as surface plasmons, which can confine and manipulate light on the nanometer scale. Surface plasmons are formed when incident photons couple with the conduction electrons at the interface between a metal or semiconductor...
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
