Laser Ophthalmoscopic Method Enables In Vivo Imaging of the Eye

WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 21, 2022 — An instrument called the two-photon excited fluorescence scanning laser ophthalmoscope (TPEF-SLO) has made it possible to view, in real time, the biochemical processes that occur in the retina. Researchers have traditionally been unable to view these processes. Developed by a team led by professor Maciej Wojtkowski from the International Centre for Translational Eye Research (ICTER), the TPEF-SLO is a compact instrument that provides spectrally resolved images of the human retina based on two-photon excitation (TPE) with near-infrared (NIR) light. A custom fiber laser with integrated...Read full article

    laser scanning
Laser scanning is a technology used to create precise digital representations of physical objects or environments by capturing their surface geometry and appearance. It involves directing a laser beam over the object or scene and measuring the distance to points on the surface by analyzing the time it takes for the laser pulses to return to the scanner. The process typically involves the following steps: Laser emission: A laser scanner emits a laser beam directed towards the object or...
    ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eyes and visual system. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye disorders and diseases. They are trained to provide comprehensive eye care, including medical, surgical, and optical interventions. Key areas within ophthalmology include: General eye care: Ophthalmologists perform routine eye examinations to assess visual acuity,...
