Laser Light Communications has entered a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), moving forward with efforts to research and develop an all-optical, laser-based medium earth orbit communication satellite. The satellite could potentially be integrated into the existing global terrestrial communications network. Such a system could prompt an increase in data transfer rates, according to Laser Light, in addition to a more secure network and elimination of spectrum allocation. It could also potentially mitigate the challenge of mutual interference. Per the agreement, DISA researchers will assist by evaluating underlying technology and the long-range benefits that an all-optical, laser-based system could provide.
