Integrated Laser on Lithium Niobate Chip to Spur Advanced Telecom

In collaboration with industry partners at Freedom Photonics and HyperLight Corp., researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) developed what the collaborators said is the first fully integrated high-power laser on a lithium niobate chip. The technology paves the way for high-powered telecommunications systems, fully integrated spectrometers, optical remote sensing, and efficient frequency conversion for quantum networks, among other applications. Lithium niobate photonics technologies have seen a number of recent developments, from...Read full article

    Glossary
    semiconductor
A semiconductor is a type of material that has electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. In other words, semiconductors have properties that are intermediate between metals (good conductors of electricity) and insulators (poor conductors of electricity). The conductivity of a semiconductor can be controlled and modified by factors such as temperature, impurities, or an applied electric field. The most common semiconductors are crystalline solids, and they are...
    integrated photonics
Integrated photonics is a field of study and technology that involves the integration of optical components, such as lasers, modulators, detectors, and waveguides, on a single chip or substrate. The goal of integrated photonics is to miniaturize and consolidate optical elements in a manner similar to the integration of electronic components on a microchip in traditional integrated circuits. Key aspects of integrated photonics include: Miniaturization: Integrated photonics aims to...
    lithium niobate
A crystalline ferroelectric material used primarily as a substrate and an active medium for thin-film optical modulators and switches. It possesses very high electro-optic and piezoelectric coefficients. LiNbO3.
    chip
    1. A localized fracture at the end of a cleaved optical fiber or on a glass surface. 2. An integrated circuit.
    integrated circuit
Multiple, interconnected circuit elements, contained on or in a common substrate, that function as a unit and not separately.
