IR Thermography May Help Diagnose Joint Inflammation

JOENSUU, Finland, Nov. 18, 2015 — Noninvasive, low-cost IR thermography may be effective for imaging joint inflammation and also shows promise for assessing ergonomic problems caused by office work. A study at the University of Eastern Finland evaluated the capability of IR thermography to detect inflammation in the knee and ankle joints of 58 children suffering from conditions such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis or autoimmune disease with arthritis, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Human skin emits IR radiation almost like a perfect blackbody — that is, one that absorbs all incoming light and...Read full article

    thermography
Thermography is a technique that involves the use of an infrared imaging device, called a thermal camera or infrared camera, to detect and visualize the infrared radiation emitted by objects. This technology allows for the creation of thermographic images, also known as thermograms, where variations in temperature are represented by different colors or shades. The basic principles of thermography are as follows: Infrared radiation emission: All objects with a temperature above absolute zero...
