Hybrid Fiber Lasers Raise the Bar for Precision Manufacturing

The best features of diode-pumped, solid-state lasers — high-quality beams with short wavelengths — are combined with the pulse-tailoring capability of fiber lasers.

HERMAN CHUI AND RAJ PATEL, MKS SPECTRA-PHYSICS

Micromachining of fine features has become an integral part of high-volume manufacturing in markets as diverse as consumer electronics, medical devices and automotive. Tiny holes, fine cuts and narrow scribes are created with precision drills, saws, routers and, increasingly, lasers. The ubiquitous smartphone, for instance, contains thousands of components, incorporates millions of drilled holes and precisely cut parts, and is manufactured in quantities of billions of units a year. solid-state laser
A solid-state laser is a type of laser that uses a solid gain medium (as opposed to a liquid or gas) to produce coherent light. The term "solid-state" refers to the fact that the active medium, where the lasing action occurs, is a solid material. This material is typically a crystalline or glass-like substance doped with specific ions or atoms that can undergo stimulated emission to generate laser light. The basic components of a solid-state laser include: Gain medium: This is the solid...
