Monolithic hierarchical plasmonic nanostructures improve results from surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Plasmonic nanostructures of gold and silver have emerged as attractive nanomaterials because of their small size, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and ability to bind to a wide range of thiolated molecular and biomolecular species through the metal-S bond. These nanostructures absorb and resonantly scatter visible and near-IR light upon excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which can be tuned over a wide spectral range by changing intrinsic parameters...Read full article

    plasmonics
Plasmonics is a field of science and technology that focuses on the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and free electrons in a metal or semiconductor at the nanoscale. Specifically, plasmonics deals with the collective oscillations of these free electrons, known as surface plasmons, which can confine and manipulate light on the nanometer scale. Surface plasmons are formed when incident photons couple with the conduction electrons at the interface between a metal or semiconductor...
    surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an analytical technique that combines the principles of Raman spectroscopy with the enhancement provided by nanostructured metallic surfaces. Raman spectroscopy is a method used to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light, typically from a laser source. SERS enhances the Raman signal by many orders of magnitude, enabling the detection and identification of...
