High-Resolution OCT Imaging Improves Ear Disease Diagnosis

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28, 2024 — A portable device that integrates optical coherence tomography (OCT) with traditional otoscopy can provide clinicians in hearing clinics with images of the interior of the tympanic membrane, or eardrum, and the middle ear, in addition to standard otoscopic images of the ear. By combining otoscopic views with high-resolution imaging, the OCT otoscope can offer a more comprehensive picture of ear health and help improve diagnostic accuracy. The device was developed by researchers at the University of Southern California (USC), who aimed to construct a device that can be easily used in a...Read full article

    Glossary
    optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in medical and scientific fields to capture high-resolution, cross-sectional images of biological tissues. It provides detailed, real-time, and three-dimensional visualization of tissue structures at the micrometer scale. OCT is particularly valuable in ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and various other medical specialties. Here are the key features and components of optical coherence tomography: Principle of...
    volumetric imaging
Volumetric imaging refers to the capture, visualization, and analysis of three-dimensional (3D) information from a volume of space. Unlike traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging, which provides information along a single plane, volumetric imaging captures data throughout a volume, enabling the reconstruction of a 3D representation. Key features and applications of volumetric imaging include: 3D data acquisition: Volumetric imaging techniques acquire data from multiple perspectives or...
