Fluorescent Biosensors Track Heme Activity in Cells

Genetically encoded fluorescent sensors are providing a way to track the mobilization of labile heme (LH) in cells. The sensors offer significant insight into the nature and dynamics of this potentially dangerous nutrient of which there has been little understanding until now. Although ratiometric fluorescent techniques for monitoring cell activity have been in use for a while, this is the first known technique that specifically senses heme. The heme sensors can be used across multiple organisms, including E. coli, yeast and human cell lines. Osiris Martinez-Guzman and Bindu...Read full article

    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
