Electroluminescence at Terahertz Frequencies Brings Silicon QCLs into Focus

ZURICH, March 15, 2021 — An international research team based at the Institute for Quantum Electronics at ETH Zurich generated electrical light from a silicon-germanium (SiGe) semiconductor structure. That material is compatible with standard silicon device fabrication processes — giving the development meaning as a potential alternate approach to building a laser on silicon. Specifically, the advancement counters the physical processes that generate light in gallium arsenide (GaAs), on which diode lasers (used commonly in barcode scanners and laser pointers) are often based. Those physical processes are...Read full article

    Glossary
    terahertz
Terahertz (THz) refers to a unit of frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, denoting waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 terahertz. One terahertz is equivalent to one trillion hertz, or cycles per second. The terahertz frequency range falls between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Key points about terahertz include: Frequency range: The terahertz range spans from approximately 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz) to 10 terahertz. This corresponds to...
    electroluminescence
The nonthermal conversion of electrical energy into light in a liquid or solid substance. The photon emission resulting from electron-hole recombination in a PN junction is one example. This is the mechanism employed by the injection laser.
