Controlling Light … with Light

HOUSTON, May 22, 2013 — Gold nanoparticles arranged into geometric patterns can control incoming light with light via a four-wave mixing process, transforming its output into a different color, Rice University theoretical and applied physicists say. The technique could be applied to the production of nonlinear media, each with tailored optical properties. Four-wave mixing has been widely studied, but Rice’s gold disc-patterning method is the first to produce materials tailored to perform four-wave mixing with a range of colored inputs and outputs. “Versatility is one of the advantages of this...Read full article

    Glossary
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    four-wave mixing
A phenomenon that occurs in WDM and DWDM systems when three closely spaced signal wavelengths near the zero-dispersion wavelength interact with each other, producing a fourth wavelength that interferes with the original signal. A moderate amount of dispersion can be designed into some systems to ensure that this effect does not take place.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
