Continuous, Stable Lasing Achieved with Perovskite Laser

FUKUOKA, Japan, Sept. 8, 2020 — A team of researchers from Kyushu University in Japan and Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry in China has demonstrated stable, continuous lasing at room temperature for over an hour using low-cost perovskites. Perovskites have been an attractive material for lasers due to their low cost, tunable colors, and high stability, though they have been prone to lasing death under continuous operation. “The realization of lasers based on organic semiconductors has primarily been impeded by losses caused by the buildups of triplets. However, the situation for triplets in quasi-2D...Read full article

    exciton
An exciton is a quasiparticle that represents the bound state of an electron and a hole in a solid-state material, typically a semiconductor or an insulator. In simpler terms, an exciton is a paired electron and hole created when an electron absorbs a photon and is promoted to a higher energy state, leaving behind an empty state called a hole. Key characteristics of excitons include: Formation: Excitons are formed when an electron in the valence band of a material is excited to the...
    perovskite
The term perovskite refers to a specific crystal structure commonly found in various materials. Perovskite structures have a cubic arrangement of oxygen ions, forming a framework within which other cations (positively charged ions) are located. This crystal structure was named after the mineral perovskite, which has the chemical formula CaTiO3 and was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia. The general formula for the perovskite structure is ABX3, where: A represents a larger...
