CAMBRIDGE, England, June 1 -- Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) has entered into a multimillion dollar joint development agreement with Tokki Corp. of Japan, a developer of engineering and manufacturing equipment for the global display industry and Nissei Sangyo Co., Ltd., as Tokki's exclusive distributor. CDT and Tokki will develop the next generation of Tokki's volume manufacturing physical vapor deposition (PVD) and encapsulation technology for CDT's light emitting polymer (LEP) displays. Development work will include the investigation of reduced cost encapsulation techniques, which in turn will extend the operating life and performance of LEP displays. CDT has purchased a 14" Tokki PVD machine to be installed at its pilot development line, currently under construction, in Godmanchester, near Cambridge. The facility is expected to come on line in early 2002. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together to adapt existing manufacturing tools and techniques to enable the volume production of LEP devices.
