Ambient Photonics Opens Low-Light Photovoltaic Cell Factory

Ambient Photonics has started mass production on low-light photovoltaic (PV) cells at its low-light PV cell factory in Scotts Valley, south of Silicon Valley. According to Ambient, the company's PV cell technology transforms indoor light into energy with 3× more power density than conventional technology. The technology provides power for electronic devices and can also eliminate the need for disposable batteries and reduce carbon emissions of battery-powered devices by as much as 80%, the company said. Glossary
    opening
In morphological image processing, a series of erosions followed by the same number of dilations.
    photovoltaic
Photovoltaic (PV) refers to a technology that converts sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductors. The term "photovoltaic" is derived from the words "photo," meaning light, and "voltaic," referring to electricity, named after Alessandro Volta, a pioneer in the field of electricity. Key points about photovoltaic technology: Photovoltaic cells: The basic building block of photovoltaic technology is the photovoltaic cell, also known as a solar cell. These cells are made of...
    solar cell
A device for converting sunlight into electrical energy, consisting of a sandwich of P-type and N-type semiconducting wafers. A photon with sufficient energy striking the cell can dislodge an electron from an atom near the interface of the two crystal types. Electrons released in this way, collected at an electrode, can constitute an electrical current.
    ambient light
Light present in the environment around a detecting or interpreting device, especially a machine vision system, and generated from outside sources. Such light must be treated as noise by the vision system.
    electronics
That branch of science involved in the study and utilization of the motion, emissions and behaviors of currents of electrical energy flowing through gases, vacuums, semiconductors and conductors, not to be confused with electrics, which deals primarily with the conduction of large currents of electricity through metals.
    power density
In laser welding or heat treating, the instantaneous laser beam power per unit area. This parameter is key in determining the fusion zone profile (area of base metal melted) on a workpiece.
