AI Brings New Capabilities to Bin Picking

For the inspection of shiny or translucent objects, or those with complex geometries, machine learning-powered vision trumps conventional vision.

HANK HOGAN, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

Plucking individual objects from a collection, or bin picking, is a staple of manufacturing and processing. Robotic bin picking has been around for decades but often required special expertise to configure, as well as some sort of manual intervention, such as placing parts on a fixture prior to the robot’s actions. However, recent advancements in machine learning and associated AI technologies are prompting emerging capabilities in robotic bin picking, saving time and money. Advancements in AI enable the random bin picking of objects that were difficult for traditional vision...Read full article

    Glossary
    bin picking
Bin picking, also known as bin picking automation or bin picking robotics, refers to the automated process of selecting and retrieving individual objects or components from a bin, container, or bulk storage system using robotic systems equipped with sensors, cameras, and manipulation capabilities. Bin picking is a challenging task in automation and robotics due to the variability in object shapes, sizes, orientations, and positions within the bin. Object recognition and localization: Bin...
    artificial intelligence
The ability of a machine to perform certain complex functions normally associated with human intelligence, such as judgment, pattern recognition, understanding, learning, planning, and problem solving.
    neural network
A computing paradigm that attempts to process information in a manner similar to that of the brain; it differs from artificial intelligence in that it relies not on pre-programming but on the acquisition and evolution of interconnections between nodes. These computational models have shown extensive usage in applications that involve pattern recognition as well as machine learning as the interconnections between nodes continue to compute updated values from previous inputs.
