AI Accelerates Skin Lesion Identification

Machine learning algorithms can differentiate between medical images — and this analysis could ultimately help doctors determine whether skin biopsy and surgery are necessary in a clinical setting.

DOUGLAS FARMER, SENIOR EDITOR [email protected]

Historically, the gold standard for diagnostics in dermatology has been histopathology, which is the examination of tissues and cells under a microscope. The tissue sample that is extracted from the patient for this purpose, such as from a lesion or mole, is called a biopsy. It is a standard routine that clinicians carry out daily — but new advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning may be able to disrupt this process by drawing data from many contexts during image analysis. Glossary
    artificial intelligence
The ability of a machine to perform certain complex functions normally associated with human intelligence, such as judgment, pattern recognition, understanding, learning, planning, and problem solving.
    reflectance confocal microscopy
Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows for high-resolution, in vivo imaging of biological tissues at the cellular level. It is particularly useful in dermatology for skin imaging but has also found applications in other fields, such as ophthalmology and cancer research. Reflectance confocal microscopy provides real-time, detailed images without the need for traditional histological tissue preparation. Key features and principles of RCM include: ...
    machine learning
Machine learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to improve their performance on a specific task through experience or training. Instead of being explicitly programmed to perform a task, a machine learning system learns from data and examples. The primary goal of machine learning is to develop models that can generalize patterns from data and make predictions or decisions without being...
