Iridex Corp. has been awarded a competitive tender by the government of Zambia for more than $350,000 in ophthalmology laser equipment. The devices can be used to treat eye diseases such as diabetic macular edema (DME) and glaucoma, which are difficult to treat in poorer countries because of cost and a small number of ophthalmic specialists. “Our laser-based treatments are as effective as drugs in terms of long-term outcomes, are much less costly to a healthcare system, and are much easier to administer from a logistics standpoint because they provide durable results,” said Iridex CEO Will Moore.
