Harris Corp. Team Demos 3-D Laser Radar

MELBOURNE, Fla., March 12 -- LADAR technology to identify potential military targets obscured by natural and camouflage cover was recently demonstrated by the Harris Corp., working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Lincoln Labs (MIT/LL) and Sarnoff Corp. The team is part of the JIGSAW project, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

JIGSAW uses an airborne LADAR transmitter/sensor and sophisticated image processing and visualization software to penetrate dense trees and camouflage in order to detect targets on the battlefield such as tanks and armored personnel carriers. The team demonstrated a prototype that was carried onboard a UH-1N Huey helicopter and flight-tested on hidden targets at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

The JIGSAW system includes a small, rugged laser with a highly sensitive detector, provided by MIT/LL; 3-D image registration, provided by Sarnoff; a 3-D image processor from MIT/LL and Harris; and a 3-D visualization and user interface from Harris.
