Acer Acquires Stake in Opticon
TOKYO, Dec. 23, 2025 — Acer and investment firm Esquarre Vision Limited will acquire stakes in automatic identification and data capture solutions company OPTOELECTRONICS, also known as Opticon. Opticon is a specialized solution provider that manufactures automatic identification and data capture systems, with products including 2D CMOS imager-based and 1D laser/CCD-based module engines, barcode scanners, handheld computers and electronic shelf labels.
Per the transaction, Acer and Esquarre will invest JPY 1.59 billion ($10M) and JPY 819 million ($5.25M) for ~38% and ~20% positions in Opticon, respectively.
For Acer, the move expands its artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) edge computing portfolio, adding identification and machine vision solutions, which creates synergy with its its subsidiaries, industrial AOPEN and Posiflex. AOPEN focuses on industrial computers for display engines and edge computing, while Posiflex Group is a provider of smart online-to-offline integrated solutions and scenario-defined embedded edge computing platforms.
The transaction is expected to be completed in early 2026, supporting Opticon’s growth and global expansion.
Founded in 1976, Opticon was among the first companies in the world to specialize in manufacturing barcode scanners. Following the deal's close, it will become the 16th publicly listed subsidiary of the Acer Group.
