TD-NIRS Produces Quantitative and Reliable Tissue Oximetry

The use of quantitative tissue oximetry devices, to accurately and non-invasively identify microvascular impairment in cerebral tissue and skeletal muscle, is expected to play a pivotal role in future clinical practice. Time domain near infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS) is an advanced optical technique that facilitates precise, reproducible, and real-time tissue oxygenation measurements and it is currently employed in cutting-edge clinical research, providing critical insights into tissue vascular health and function.

This presentation first includes clinical data from a large cohort of pediatric subjects, admitted to Buzzi Children's Hospital in Milan, Italy that were identified as clinically stable. Data from this group helped establish normal cerebral tissue oxygenation values. The extensive dataset provides a comprehensive understanding of expected physiological values and highlights significant deviations found in age- and sex-matched patients with respiratory pathologies. Additionally, the application of TD-NIRS in skeletal muscle monitoring is discussed, with a focus on tissue microvasculature and perfusion impairment in critical care settings to promote more effective and personalized treatments. TD-NIRS oximetry has proven to be a reliable and highly reproducible tool for comparing and evaluating cerebral and peripheral tissue oximetry across subjects and cohorts in clinical settings.

About the presenter

Michele LacerenzaMichele Lacerenza, Ph.D., received his Master of Science degree in physics engineering, nano-optics, and photonics from Politecnico di Milano in 2018, where he also pursued his doctorate in physics in 2022, which focused on development and exploitation of compact photonic platforms for cerebral and muscle oximetry monitoring. He has served as reviewer, director, and chair and organizer of international scientific events, as well as participated in several high-impact international research projects. Lacerenza is now CTO and co-founder of PIONIRS s.r.l., aiming to foster novel discoveries and improve diagnostics in the medical sectors.
