HAMBURG, Germany, March 9, 2011 — Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has announced the release of its Count & Measure module for the cellSens Dimension software suite. Simplifying design and automation of image analysis protocols, it provides advanced object detection and structure differentiation to maximize accuracy and reproducibility while minimizing the time users must devote to manual image processing.
The system can be easily configured to recognize objects and structures based upon user specifications by employing a variety of threshold-based methods, thereby defining rules with which to process a batch of images. It is also suited to performing complex analyses such as those requiring multiple measurements per image.
The module integrates seamlessly with the cellSens Dimension platform to supply flexible automated image analysis. It performs thresholding and spectral unmixing to facilitate the definition of objects of interest, including automatic, manual, manual hue saturation value and adaptive methods. This standardizes measurement parameters and reduces errors and variability, while simplifying and speeding up data capture. Acquired information can be exported to Microsoft Excel as diagrams, graphs or raw data.
Measurement protocols can be created with just a few clicks of the mouse, opening up a range of automated analysis options to users at all levels of expertise. Measurement parameters available include area, aspect ratio, bisector, bounding box, gravity center, identification, mass center, intensity values, convexity, diameter, elongation, ferret, extent, next-neighbor distance, orientation, perimeter, radius, shape and sphericity. Each of these can be combined and used in conjunction with automatic object detection to perform complex data analysis, enabling generation of comprehensive data sets with minimal user input, all within the same processing run.
The cellSens Dimension software package provides features designed to offer maximum control and processing for microscope-based experimental systems. The addition of optional modules, including cellSens Database, Netcam, Multiposition, Deconvolution and Multichannel 5D, extends the flexibility of the platform. Users can conduct a range of complex experiments, from extended focal imaging to multiple image alignment and multiposition imaging.
With the ability to control a wide range of Olympus and non-Olympus hardware, the software can be used to conduct precise time-lapse experiments. The resulting time stacks can then be put through kinetic and threshold-based object analysis. The data produced is easy to export and analyze, while the report composer uses Microsoft Word templates to generate user-defined reports based on information retrieved directly from the cellSens database. This facilitates interpretation and makes it easy to share and discuss data with colleagues.
