HAMBURG, Germany, July 26, 2012 — Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has launched the NA 1.7 APON100×HOTIRF objective for imaging intracellular molecules. With a numerical aperture of 1.7, the objective achieves high Z-resolution for total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy, and offers thin penetration depth and a high signal-to-noise ratio. The lens is suitable for use in single-molecule dynamic studies, fluorescence detection and superresolution applications.
It combines a special sapphire glass and a low-autofluorescence (reduced noise) immersion oil that has a high index of refraction. It improves single-molecule dynamic studies resulting from the enhanced signal-to-noise ratio offered when detecting surface-bound molecules, with minimal background emission from molecules in the surrounding solution.
The objective provides the optical performance required for superresolution applications and TIRF colocalization studies, with high spatial resolution generated by thin optical slices at the surface of the specimen. With a magnification of 100×, it also is suited for in vitro TIRF microscopy; for example, when studying cytoskeletal dynamics or other cellular components in solution.
