NOZAY, France, March 24, 2009 – The 1999 HEP series 980-nm pump laser modules have been unveiled by 3S Photonics.
Operating at an internal temperature of 45 °C, the modules do not require a thermoelectric cooler and can deliver up to 500-mW ex-fiber output power while, the company says, enabling a better than 40% reduction in power consumption compared with existing pumps. This energy savings, along with low operating current levels, will permit the design of a new class of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers with stringent power requirements.
The pump modules incorporate the proprietary and high-reliability submarine-qualified 1999 LCv2 GaAs laser chip, which powers the company’s current generation of submarine pumps. The chip is housed in an industry-standard, hermetically sealed 14-pin cooled butterfly package and is stabilized by a fiber Bragg grating integrated into the fiber pigtail.
The laser modules offer stable performance over a wide dynamic range and, the company says, deliver 25% more power than other available pumps. They are fully qualified according to Telcordia GR-468-CORE requirements and are suitable for use in terrestrial and submarine applications.
