VANCOUVER, Wash., Oct. 9, 2007 -- nLight Corp., a Vancouver, Wash.-based maker of high-power semiconductor lasers, announced today it will acquire specialty fiber manufacturer Liekki Corp., based in Lohja, Finland. Terms were not disclosed.

Scott Keeney, nLight’s president and CEO, said, “This is a very important acquisition that integrates core technology for the rapidly growing markets for semiconductor and fiber lasers. Combining the nLight and Liekki product portfolios will bring compelling solutions to our industry."

William Willson, managing director of nLight's fiber division, said, Liekki's experience in fibers and modules, its direct nanoparticle deposition (DND) fiber technology and its manufacturing facility enable nLight to provide customers with "a complete supply chain from semiconductor lasers and fibers to optical modules."

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of this year.

Glossary
nanoparticle
A small object that behaves as a whole unit or entity in terms of it's transport and it's properties, as opposed to an individual molecule which on it's own is not considered a nanoparticle.. Nanoparticles range between 100 and 2500 nanometers in diameter.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
